Function: The variable valve timing solenoid is located in the cylinder head to control the camshaft position and regulate intake (exhaust) volume. Common signs of a bad solenoid valve include: 1. Poor engine idle speed. 2. Engine stumbles when it climbs hills or under load. 3. Check Engine Light (CEL) always comes on, common fault codes are: P0010 and P0011, P0013, P0014. Note: Most VVT solenoids fail or do not function properly because of sludge. Sludge blocks the flow of water through the valve screen and causes the solenoid to function improperly. Using the correct lubricant and following a strict oil change schedule will increase the life of the VVT solenoid.
